Amazing ice cream and the portions are insanely huge. Line moves fast but it is chaos inside. As rookie it is over whelming. Enjoy the best ice cream in the state

WOW - My wife and tried Shermans this past weekend while traveling though the South Haven area. This place is located a little off the beaten path. However, it's worth while. The ice cream is not the usual you'd find. It's thick and creamy and tasty. If you're looking for some quality ice cream, this is definitely the place to go. On top of that, they have a nice assortment of flavors and types of items. I recommend giving this place a try.

Really amazing ice cream. There's nothing like it. So many great flavors, it is hard to choose just one. The birthday cake is my fave!

Don't order anything over the baby size scoup unless you're looking to upgrade your waist size! Shermans is the best icecream in Michigan, and they are VERY generous with their servings. We stop here every time we come to South Haven to get our Sherman's fix in! The line is usually around 15 minutes, but looks worse than it actually is, just make sure you grab a number as soon as you get inside! There's one flavor that has cherries inside of it and it was definitely my favorite! There's nothing better than going to Shermans after dinner around 9pm when the sun has just set and eating icrecream on one of their wooden benches outside in the 90 degree heat!

I had a sundae here to top off an early birthday dinner. I almost never get sundaes, but when I saw the description - vanilla ice cream, hot fudge, peanut butter, AND Reese's Pieces - I was sold. Nuts cost extra, but yes please I want whipped cream and a cherry on top! The ice cream is absolutely delicious. The rest of my family raved about the Mackinac Island Fudge flavor. Be warned - the portions are huge. I (sadly) didn't finish my sundae, and I ordered a small. If you're an ice cream fan, definitely stop here during your visit to South Haven!

I went to Sherman Dairy Bar because of the reviews I read here on Yelp. I was lucky and must've hit it at an off time because I didn't have to wait at all. But frankly, I don't understand the hype. My first disappointment was that they no longer have the carrot cake flavor shown on their website. The person who waited on me said it was her favorite, but they stopped offering it a while ago. I tasted the key lime pie flavor, and while it was ok, there's no way I could eat more than a couple bites of it. I settled on the lemon lime sorbet in a cup because I don't like sorbet in cones. Contrary to what people here have indicated, the baby size scoop was not a very generous serving at all; for over $3, it was MAYBE the size of the kind of scooper you'd buy for your home. And, it was served in a tiny little plastic cup with a little bump in the bottom, ostensibly to make it look like there was more in the cup than there actually was. That said, I liked the place itself. I liked that they had tables and booths inside (especially on the hot, humid evening) as well as outside. And the fact that they had a water cooler and glasses available was a nice touch. I also found the staff very nice and friendly. If I am in the area again, I would stop by, but I wouldn't go out of my way to find it like I did this time.

The Good- huge scoops, yummy ice cream, blue cows The Bad- manager had the worst sour attitude (young girl with anchor tattoo), slow service and not overly friendly Moral of the story maybe if the manager didn't act like scooping ice cream on a beautiful summer day was like pulling teeth the rest of the employees would have a better attitude. It's ice cream! Smile dudes!!

  • Joe J.

A popular favorite! I seldom go here in the summer because of the tourist crowd but on slower days it's an awesome stop with great ice cream. Also, the coffee is complimentary if you're eating in.

  • Richard Y.

For all the hubbub, I was disappointed in the taste of my black cherry single on a sugar cone. The cherries tasted off, the ice cream was creamy , but lacked the flavor punch of a, say, graeters. A single scoop was ridic huge And the ambiance... There's nothing charming about a circa 1975 rundown office building with a mystery annex. Our entire group of 9 was equally as unimpressed. Dairy Queen here we come!

  • Rae S.

Yummy ice cream! Giant cones. This is the kind of icecream that stays cold a long time and won't drip all over you unless you're a slow eater. They charge you double if you want two flavors in one cone. Boo. Plenty of seating inside.

I was thinking how wonderful Sherman's is- I have been coming here all my life- and the history of this place is not as old as the town of South Haven, but it's pretty close. The lines can be long, but they move quickly, and the kids behind the counter do a great job- If you have never had a "Black Cow" they make the best you ever had. Great flavors of ice cream, their hot fudge has always been a favorite- I suggest getting that on the side! I miss it so much, I live in Chicago, there are some places that serve Sherman's Ice Cream here, but it is just not the same as what you get at the dairy bar. If you go to South Haven, MI, you must go to Sherman's.

  • Gary H.

Seems like a tradition in South Haven. Go to the beach, watch the sun set, then head off to Sherman's at dark. We did that. It's crowded but they move through the orders pretty quickly. Our first night we pulled number 64 on arrival and they were serving 40....we waited about 20 minutes. The place was jam packed. Ice cream and milk shakes are phenomenal. Hokey Pokey and Banana Splits were splendid favorites during our week of vacation. Worth the wait for sure!!! Afternoon hours weren't so crowded which was even better!

My wife & I are from Chicago. Every year the city slickers make our trek to DeGrandchamp Blueberries in South Haven, MI to stock up on blueberries. As an absolute must we always stop off at Sherman's ice cream. I have been going to Sherman's since the mid 80's. The lines are almost always out the door, but they move pretty quick. Three is no need to ever get more then a single scoop (unless gluttony is your thing) as they are huge. The ice cream is delicious very rich, creamy and affordable. If you ever find yourself in the area (and even if you need to travel a bit to get there) stop in at Sherman's & get some ice cream. You will be glad that you did. I plan on making another trek to South Haven during the blueberry season and stopping off @ Sherman's for a scoop of ice cream

Our family has been coming to Sherman's (and South Haven) for almost 40 years. It used to sit in a field off Phoenix St with a farmhouse next door. It still amazes me everything that has been built around it. It's my favorite ice cream parlor anywhere in the US. On Summer weekend evenings, it can be 40 people deep, but they have a number system like at the deli counter, or you can get in line at the window outside. It usually goes pretty quickly and, in my opinion, all part of the excitement of going to Sherman's. After all, with over 30 flavors it takes a long time to decide what you want! Servings are HUGE. A baby regular cone/cup is the equivalent of a single and a single would be more like double at most other ice cream parlors. A single waffle cone is probably almost a pint of ice cream and if you order a double or triple waffle cone, you probably shouldn't have eaten before heading over for ice cream. I used to order single waffle cones as a kid and I have no idea how I was able to get through all that ice cream! I stick to a single regular cone nowadays. Prices are still extremely reasonable compared to what you pay in proportion to what you get at placed like Kilwin's and Baskin Robins. I think it's about $3.75 for a single cone or cup. My flavor recommendations are: Chocolate Turtle, Chocolate Malt Supreme, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Chocoholic, and Mint Chocolate Chip. (I see a theme here) One odd tidbit...the water from their water fountain is the best water. I don't know why...maybe because it's so cold and refreshing after the sweet, creamy ice cream, but it is really good water!

Just stopped by tonight after a day at the beach... SO. GOOD. There are so many flavors to choose from, but I chose the Mackinac Island Fudge Frozen Yogurt. It was so creamy and the fudge tasted amazing. Word of advice though: unless you have a really big appetite for ice cream, go with the baby size. I shared one with someone and we still didn't finish it all.

    (5)
  • Brian C.

Great ice cream at a good price the portion size is great we had the banna split and a baby chocolate come at it was great

  • Gina S.

The best Ice Cream ever! I wish we could take this place home with us. I would be too overweight because I wanted to visit every day! Don't expect sandwiches, or anything but ice cream when you visit here, but expect the biggest cone, or try the sampler! Just don't miss out. To avoid the big crowds, go during the day! Highly recommended by all in our group! YUM!

  • Desiree B.

Any good restaurant will replace something if you are disatisfied with it, but not Sherman's. I paid for a single dip of French silk in a waffle come. It was so rich it hurt my teeth. I asked to get something else instead and the young girl helping us refused. The simple solution would be to ask for a sample, but they were so busy that it was overwhelming. I threw away my $6 ice cream and walked outside not happy. My husband bought another $6 cone of strawberry. It was okay, but being from Cincinnati I guess we are spoiled in the ice cream department. I prefer Marble Slab or even UDF over here, especially with the terrible service. Also, there aren't any napkins or trash cans outside so eat fast or it melts all over you and the dirty tables.

  • Jacki M.

By far the best ice cream I've tried in the USA... And that's saying a lot! We came 7 mins after they opened and the place was so packed that we didn't have much room to move around or look at flavors. But like some comments I read on here, do not be intomidated, the line moves quickly. I took everyone's pick and got yellow batter ice cream. Amazing I felt like I was eating a dq ice cream cake.. But right from the farm. So fresh and perfect. I tried red velvet and that was amazing. It doesn't taste like the "generic red velvet insert food item here". It tasted like someone's grandma made it, the flavor is rich. I recommend both.

While staying in South Haven with my family, we had to come here! It was crazy crowded with a long line inside and outside, so we were apprehensive. However, they have a pretty efficient staff. We picked a number to wait for our turn, and the line moved very quickly. There are a TON of choices so the worst part was trying to choose! I ended up going with yellow cake batter which was to die for! There were little chunks of cake mixed in :) I opted for a glass, not a cone although they did have several cone options. It was still as big as my head, and I was struggling to finish it! Luckily, we all kind of helped each other. Everyone loved their selection. Overall, worth the wait and must-stop location!

    (5)
  • John S.

Sherman Ice Cream. Lots of people but the line goes fast. I had the Blackberry Supreme it was good but to rich for me to finish a single scoop waffle cone. I should have gotten a bowl it melted quickly.

    (4)
  • David R.

Stellar ice cream. I tried a handful of flavors, all outstanding, but by far my favorite was the coconut almond fudge, which comprises pretty much everything that I want in an ice cream. They have a great variety of flavors, not just plain janes and usual suspects such as chocolate, mint chip, moose tracks, et al. (My mom would have been thrilled to see lemon custard--a rarity.) This makes it hard to decide, but the staff will give you samples to help. Or maybe that doesn't help because they are all delicious. This may be a plus or a minus to you, but the scoop sizes are enormous. Normal people should order a baby, which is like a small or regular anywhere else. Two kids could split one. The "small" is the size of Mike Tyson's fist and could serve two adults. And the large is like...dinosaur balls. Families of four or more. No single person needs that much ice cream, for heaven's sake!

a must go to when visiting South Haven

You can't get much better than this. The ice cream is delicious and there are soo many flavors. I have liked every flavor I've tried, they're all so good.

  • Mark M.

Definitely one of the best spot of South Haven. Great ice creams and you'll definitely get your money's worth here. It's always busy even when it's in the 60s w/ 15mph wind (definitely too cold for the beach, for me). When we were here last year, the line was very long. We waited 30 mins, but it was worth. Hence, we came back for it.

  • Kenneth P.

Go to Sherman's, where the best chocolate ice cream in the world, chocomania, can be found. Old fashioned parlor, often very busy, incredible portions, and the ice cream is made on premises.

    (4)
  • John A.

Some of the best ice cream I've ever had. Great combinations of flavor, amazing quality and insanely cheap prices for the portions. Worth way more than five stars. Get the pretzel cone. Always get the pretzel cone.

  • Elaine M.

YUM! I think that 99% of the reviews have to start this way! Great ice cream, tons of flavors, large portions at a good price! The waitress that served (different establishment) us used to work at Sherman's and highly recommended we stop here on our way out of town. She said that here two favorite flavors were caramel caramel caramel and coconut almond fudge. I thought that I would get a double, one of each flavor. The scooper scooped out the coconut almond fudge first and when I saw how huge the one scoop was, I knew that I could only have the one. The hubby got one scoop of the caramel caramel caramel. They were nice to give us a plastic cup to split, so that we could each have half of the other's. Both flavors were outstanding but they have so many, and I want to try each and every one!

    (5)
  • Greg F.

They are not kidding about the servings here, they are more than generous. The variety of hard ice cream is impressive. I enjoyed the Mackinac Island Fudge. Great value as well, as six of us were treated for under 25 bucks. Was easy to see why this is a local favorite.

So normally we head to Captain Nemo's who supplies Sherman's Ice Cream. But because of winter hours, we were forced to come to the dairy. It looks like a diner inside and there's always a huge line. They've certainly evolved over the years because they no longer give small portions (YES!) and now you can have sundaes, brownies, cookie bowls and more. I approve. -Pumpkin Ice Cream: yum. One of the best pumpkin ice creams that I've eaten. It had so much flavor and great spice. -Peanut Butter Cup Brownie Sundae: The PB Cup Ice Cream is ALWAYS a hit. I love how much peanut butter they put in and the little PB cups. It's delicious--creamy and just perfectly sweet. As for the brownie sundae, they warm the brownie for you but it's a bit too cake-y textured for me. But the hot fudge sauce on top! OHHHHH yum. And look how generous they are. FINAL VERDICT: The portions are now huge (so they are worth the very low price)! And the ice cream is always delicious. Plus those girls work hard to make your ice cream perfect for you.

My extended family and I are addicted to Shermans! We stop here when we're in town before even making it to the beach house. Cones are colossal - the baby size is like a double cone at most other places. The ice cream is incredible (high fat content) with too many amazing flavors to list - favs include caramel, caramel, caramel; chocolate silk; and lots of kid friendly choices like confetti birthday cake. Expect to wait, but the lines generally move quickly. A great, old fashioned ice cream joint - and ya gotta love the blue cows on the roof!

    (5)
  • Kate H.

Forget all other ice-cream experiences. This is the dessert destination for ice-cream lovers. The flavor selection is expansive and sure to satisfy any taste. Caramel, Caramel, Caramel is delicious and creamy, Lindy Lou hits right for chocolate-cherry lovers, Grasshopper is great for chocolate brownie fans, Mackinac Island Fudge is pretty dreamy with that fudge. I like Sherman's Ice Cream for its creamy consistency. Not overly sweet like some brands. What keeps us coming back is the INSANE sizing. Just order the "baby scoop" size, and you might be shocked to find that it's the actual size of a baby's head! Anything larger will send you into a diabetic coma.

    (5)
  • Will H.

I have been going to Sherman's my whole life and love it. They have a massive selection of ice cream and it's all reasonably priced considering the portions are huge! Depending on the time of day it can be a zoo, but that's part of the fun, they are busy for a good reason. Definitely a great stop if you're visiting South Haven.

    (5)
  • C P.

There's better in the world, but no better in South Haven! Hop in line for locally made goodness. The Blue Moon is the bluest around. Grasshopper is pretty fine.

    (5)
  • Claudia M.

Yummy!!! Of course I'm an ice cream fan. Who isn't? We almost always stay at the Hampton INN when we come to South Haven and this place is across the street and always packed! That's a good sign. I tried the brownie sundae and it was the best sundae ever. Warm hot fudge and lots of peanuts.....mmmmmm...delicious.

  • Janey A.

I stopped here this past weekend, and even though the weather was cold and rainy, Sherman's was busy and bustling! You can tell it is a local favorite, and it did not disappoint. They had many different flavors of ice cream to choose from, and the friendly employee behind the counter was more than happy to let me sample a few until I found the right one. I went with a seasonally-appropriate "Pumpkin" flavor that was a perfect blend of pumpkin, nutmeg, and cinnamon flavoring reminiscent of pumpkin pie. I only ordered the "Baby" sized scoop and received more ice cream than I can personally eat in one sitting! It was a great deal for the price, and I was so pleased with the purchase that I ordered a pint of ice cream to take back home for my family.

    (5)
  • Chris D.

The ice cream is pretty good, but a little too sweet for my taste buds. They do have a lot of flavors available so maybe it was just the blackberry. The lines are just too long here to have a good experience and it's the experience that matters. Everyone crams inside the small space in front of the counter like cattle where you are literally shoulder to shoulder and nut to butt making everything extremely uncomfortable.

    (2)
  • Chris N.

Super delicious and smooth ice cream! The line here goes out the door! Try their blueberry waffle sundae. Vanilla ice cream with blueberry syrup and waffle cone crumbles. Yum!

    (5)
  • Chris G.

Sherman's is South Haven. The ice cream is smooth delicious and fairly priced as portions are generous. Atmosphere is old time classic. Worth the wait for your scoop

    (5)
  • Genevieve N.

Wow! I visited here a couple of weeks ago. The chocolate malt milkshake was great! My 2-year old son loved it too :) Also, my husband got a small ice cream cone, and it was anything but small.

    (5)
  • Caleb Y.

Great ice cream flavors. The spot is old and does not scream welcome, as it is in a boring and not very scenic area. However, I love the ice cream! Worth a visit.

    (3)
  • Toni F.

Sherman's is a South Haven tradition. I'm not a big ice cream fan but my family loves this place and we try to get here a couple of times each season. The cones, sundaes are HUGE - almost too big for one person to eat alone. I usually get the Baby size and often don't finish that. A great variety of flavors and they now have a Cookie Dish you can get your ice cream in. Personally, I think the ice cream is way too sweet but I recently tasted my husband's Carrot Cake flavor and it was really good.

    (3)
  • Erin R.

Awesome ice cream!!! Biggest servings ever!! You get a TON! My husband is an ice cream fanatic and he LOVES this place!! We have to go whenever we're in South Haven. Do yourself a favor and go get some cream!

    (5)
  • Rayie M.

Long line, but I can see why. My banana split was huge. Great price to for what you get. Will be back here the next time we visit.

    (4)
  • Mary T.

I'm a big fan when we're in town. The ice cream is the BEST. However, management better pay attention to some of the teens working behind the counters. My 98 year old grandmother could scoop ice cream faster than these kids. Dear LORD...I spent 40 minutes in the outside line waiting for 2 scoops of ice cream. The only reason I stayed was because I promised my 11 year old we would stop at Shermans on our way out of town. What are those kids doing back there...churning the ice cream by hand? Best ice cream (and biggest), but bring a lawn chair, umbrella and a good book to read when they open the outdoor window.

    (4)
  • J B.

Its worth the trip just to go here! Yes the lines are almost always unavoidable but it pays off. Love the Mint Chocolate Chip!!

    (5)
  • Grant P.

Long lines make for great ice cream in huge portions. Unique flavors in combinations you won't find anywhere else. And a great value for the size of the scoops you get. I'd certainly return to try more of this fresh, locally made treat.

    (5)
  • Emily M.

Amazing, per usual. Long lines moved fast! Tried the Georgia Peach ice cream in lieu of my usual Blue Moon and was not disappointed. Expect ice cream as big as your head! Highly recommend. If you live around Downers, I'm pretty sure Every Day's a Sundae serves the stuff! Yum!

    (5)
  • Yael J.

Not disappointing, well maybe the portions are too large. Good selection of flavors. Delicious. Blackberry and key lime my favs. Not a beautiful storefront, but a piece of history. It's a classic.

    (5)
  • Josh Z.

This ICE-Cream was GREAT!!! There is a reason their was a line out the door. Tons of flavors, and I'm not joking when I say the portions are the biggest ones I've ever seen. If you order a baby scoop, it will be about 2 scoops anywhere else. Single scoop was huge and I had the waffle cone of course and it was mounded way over the top.

    (5)
  • Kat k.

When you go in- you take a deli number for service, while ten highschool kids scramble to process orders for maybe 50 people crammed in this little shop. But don't lose hope- the ice cream is creamy, flavors are unique, serving sizes are generous, and you can sample anything you'd like! A much needed stop along the trip home to Chicago from Michigan!

    (5)
  • Kristen J.

The long lines go faster than you think. Don't be intimidated as it is worth a bit of a wait. This place gives huge scoops and isn't stingy about giving you a cup and spoon so you don't drop your precious ice cream in your lap on the drive out. Friendly and patient staff and good ice cream means ill definitely be back this summer for more. Yummy!

Vacation locations often provide a plentiful selection of dessert choices and our family loves ice cream. Our four favorite stops include Gelateria dei Neri in Florence, Italy, Sherman's Dairy Bar, Jones Ice Cream in Baldwin, MI and Moomers up near Traverse City Michigan. In that order. At the risk of sounding snobby I mention the Gelato place in Italy. World class incredible stuff. Sherman's ranks right up there. No joke. Sherman's is not fancy. One does not take their big city yuppy type girlfriend here to impress her with the fancy place. One takes their big city yuppy type girlfriend here to impress her with how great the ice cream is. Get someone to take a picture with your camera phone of the two of you standing by the huge blue cow on the roof. One day your grand kids will get a laugh. That's how great this place is. Now I warn you that we have family not too far from Sherman's and we've been coming here for 50 years. I have a "I ate a Pig Sunday" that is 40 years old. Nostalgia does play a factor. But really, this place is a must stop if you are driving up or down Intrastate 196 in southwest Michigan. Our favorites flavors are Blue Moon, Blackberry and we just tried the chocolate covered pretzel ice cream and loved it. The scoop sizes are huge! Enjoy!!!!

I have been going to Sherman Dairy my entire life. The ice cream and the portions simply cannot be beat. I am serious as a heart attack when I tell you, I have driven to South Haven from Chicago (about 300 mile round trip) for dinner and Sherman Dairy. This place is that good. FYI, they are only open from April to October. If you are near South Haven and you don't get yourself some ice cream here, shame on you!

    (5)
  • Ben K.

The ice cream is very good. I enjoy the complexity of the flavors and how there are pieces in the ice cream that enhance the flavor (ie the red velvet having red velvet cake pieces in it). That being said.... The portions are too large, I know ice cream blasphemy, who has too much ice cream? But based on how rich (and delicious) the ice cream is, there is a saturation point, where the ice cream stops tasting as good an you want to stop.... But there is sill so much left. On the other hand, if you have a friend who likes the same ice cream as you, you can both enjoy a baby scoop and feel satisfied.

    (4)
  • Chris W.

Great ice cream with ridiculous serving sizes for a reasonable cost.

    (5)
  • Samantha G.

Love this place! The scoops are gigantic borderline impossible for most mortals. We love to get the Blue Moon and the yellow cake batter which has real delicious little bites of cake. I also love the cookies n cream because the cream is not overly sweet. I'm not a huge ice cream fan on a normal day, but I love Sherman's.

    (5)
  • Mark H.

Best Ice Cream in Michigan! If you are any where near South Haven this is a must stop to satisfy your sweet tooth. Make sure to leave some leeway time though because lines can be long and tables fill up fast. My Favorite by far is Blue-Moon! don't forget to ask for a chocolate dipped banana.

  • Lindsay M.

So, I have a problem with dairy because I usually get sick, but that's all pushed aside when it comes to having some Sherman's ice cream! Hands down, the best ice cream you'll ever taste. There's a ton of different flavors and they are ALL delicious. The serving sizes are humungo! The sundaes are to die for and I love getting my ice cream and sitting outside at the picnic table. My family has a lake house in South Haven and have been going here for years. We literally make at least one Sherman's stop per trip and bring any new comers here to have the same experience as we do. This place brings back some great childhood memories and makes more and more each visit. LOVE IT!

Truly one of the great ice cream spots in the country. Counter service with long lines on summer evenings that move surprisingly quickly. The main event here are massive "single" scoop waffle cones, though more elaborate dishes are available and look tempting when you see a nearby guest enjoying them. Chocomania, Sherman's Tracks (an above-average rendition of the now ubiquitous Moose Tracks), and Blue Moon [for the kids] are some of my favorites. Go with the still-filling baby cone if you want to save some calories for other stops. It's been difficult to pin down exactly where this brand is going and what it's about. I swear I read they were acquired by nearby Hudsonville a few years back - which would explain the flavor-sharing that seems to go on between these two labels. I've always been confused as to which flavors were their own creation and which were licensed from other companies. When you look behind the counter and through the swinging doors you'll see signs admonishing the staff that "portion sizes are out of control! cut back!" and "if you dirty a t-shirt, you buy it!". It definitely makes it sound like a staff vs. management battle. Perhaps I should just enjoy the ice cream and relax. Their future isn't my problem. Unless they close up shop in which case it would suddenly become a problem for me! :) Expensive? I don't think so. Ice cream for a family of four isn't cheap anywhere I've found. Sherman's is perhaps the most iconic South Haven business. 5+ stars and I hope it never changes.

  • Rosanna L.

A single scoop at Sherman's can be seen as 3-4 scoops at your nationwide ice cream parlors such as, Doukin Doughnuts or Coldstone. I got the Almond Coconut Fudge and the mixture of the almond, the coconut, and the fudge was perfect. It was a great price for a huge amount of ice cream! It makes me want to visit South Haven, MI more often! Definitely visit this place if you're ever in town or just driving through!

  • Irina G.

It's like they found a golden milk cow and made friends with it so the cow is always happy and they could always have the worlds best ice cream. Golden milk cow. Thats the secret. I go to Michigan once a year, and no matter where I am in MI, we stop here and moan under the sun over the massive, yet cheap, delicious melting, creamy, heavenly goodness that lies within. Do not eat dinner before or after going to Sherman's. And take a tub or two home. You won't regret it, even when you are 10 lbs heavier. You will just say, wow, I look like one helluva golden milk cow. :)

  • Marvin A.

Yes, the ice cream is good. No, its not the "Best of the Best". Yes, the prices are reasonable. Yes, during the summer months, expect a 15 minute wait. So why, do out-of-towners keep coming back year after year ?? Because their parents brought them to Sherman's, and now they follow in the same foot steps, by bring their kids. It's a wonderful Ritual !

Came to south haven for vacation and people told me about this dairy bar and how amazing it is...they were right. they are generous with the portions and the price is right. Love the amount of flavors you can choose from.

One of my favorite road trip stops, we never miss it driving from Michigan back to Chicago. There are just not enough of these local old fashion ice cream places any more. Its as much about the ambiance as it is the great ice cream. Its a must stop in the fall for the hot apple sundaes with camel ice cream, I wait all year for that treat! I dont think its changed at all in the 15+ years I have been going there, and if were luck it will not in the next 15....Dont miss it!

I hadn't been here in 15 years, and before that probably 20 more years before that.......it is still the best. Be a PIG.

If you do nothing else on the trip up or down the western Michigan coastline- you really do owe it to yourself to stop at Sherman's Dairy for Ice Cream off US 31 Exit 20 (east) Grand Haven, MI. The old time parlor decor is getting a little dated but the fresh out of the plant ice cream more than compensates. If it's a nice day there are picnic tables outside to sit at. It's just the right sort of place to stop for a break before the long haul the rest of the way along Lake Michigan.

Great ice cream with many flavors to choose from but very popular so plan on waiting in line. It will be worth it!

First, take a number. Then, double check that you took a number. After that, admire the list of excellent flavors on offer and realize that anything you choose is going to be fresh, creamy and wonderful. Portion size is very large and in line with what you pay. My only criticism is the location of the menu. To read it, you need to turn away from the counter, which is bad move, since that's where the people scooping the ice cream are. On a less busy day, maybe not a big deal, but it was packed the day we were there, so it became a bit stressful. Oh, and about that number, make sire you take one when you enter. Seriously.

I don't understand what the fuss is about. There is nothing fantastic about this ice cream, or the 25 minute wait I had. Its not worth it. go to Wall greens down the road, you can get a tub of Ice Cream from the freezer, that is much better. I will not be going back, and I will not be recommending it.

Sherman's is the best ice cream in Michigan, and probably my favorite anywhere. It is so smooth and creamy, and they have great flavors. While you can get Sherman's ice cream at places like Captain Nemo's in South Haven, Oink's Dutch Treat in New Buffalo, and Every Day's a Sundae in Downers Grove, a trip to the factory on Phoenix Street in South Haven is like a trip to Mecca. If you are in town and don't stop in, you should be shamed and taken out of society. Warning: the portions are huge!

The ice cream is kind of expensive but so worth it. The staff is super friendly and there are a lot of flavor options. I love the ice cream cone that is dipped in chocolate.

What a treat - pun intended. Was traveling for business and was staying across the street at the Hampton Inn and saw people coming and going all night from my window so I had to check it out. Take a number when you walk in - it's easy to miss this. I had a scoop of Caramel, Caramel, Caramel and a scoop of Chocolate Turtle. I LOVE ice cream and both of these favors were truly outstanding. There were so many interesting flavors - I wanted to extend my trip to try more!

Great, old fashioned ice cream store. They make the ice cream in the back. Prices are reasonable, portions are huge. Definitely bring an appetite. During the summer it is a bit of a wait. Really the only cons are that it's only open March thru October and it's a 2 hour drive from Chicago.

We recently visited Sherman's and ordered dipped chocolate waffle cones with two scoops of ice cream per cone. The two scoop option serves up large portions of fresh ice cream goodness. They are soooo many flavors to try, so we chose a flavor per scoop. I tried a large scoop of coffee ice cream with a scoop of a strawberry cheesecake ice cream. A very refreshing combination!

I've been stopping in Sherman's since I was a kid. The best ice cream I've ever had. I like the cool cartoon map of South Haven in there, and the clean glasses by the water fountain are great once you're done with a thick ice cream. The scoops are huge, but if that isn't enough for you there is something called the 'Pig's Dinner' which I believe is still served in a trough. I've only seen one kid finish one, and by the time he was done his eyes glazed over as if he was dead inside. I'm pretty sure one person isn't supposed to ingest that much ice cream at once. There isn't much else to say except expect a line, and get a scoop of Chocolate Malt Supreme.

Don't pass through SW Michigan without trying Sherman's. It's the BEST ice cream I've ever had!! I get so sad all winter, just waiting to be able to get up to MI to have Sherman's ic cream again. I really miss the Irish Cream flavor, that was always my favorite. Great quality and nice people, the long lines are worth the wait !!

A must stop anytime I'm around south-western Michigan. Fantastic ice cream, huge choice of flavors, and huge tasty portions. Be prepared for a bit of a wait and don't forget to take a number when you walk in the door. There is seating available inside, but few things are sweeter than enjoying the delicious ice cream outside on a warm sunny day. Be warned, the portions are gigantic (and devilishly delicious).

Incredible selection, large quantities, good flavor and texture. Staff doesn't always stay focused on the customers so the lines get pretty enormous. Definately worth stopping at with the kids... or by yourself for a little over indulgence.

I sometimes will make a trip or two to Michigan each summer- whether it is my aunt's cottage in Coloma, my grandmother's place on Beaver Island or a trip to Rothbury Music Festival. No matter what, I HAVE to stop at Sherman's Dairy Bar for a scoop of Grasshopper Ice Cream. Mint chocolate chip fans, you will die happy once you've tried it. The prices have gone up since I was a kid but the portions are huge. I have never had anything here besides the Grasshopper but I know my family loves the Chocomania, Mac. Island Fudge and other flavors. I heard a store in one of my nearby Chicago suburbs serves Shermans and I plan on making a trip to find it. Five stars!

I'm confused reading some of these reviews on whether or not they've gone to the same place I have. (08/02/08). To the young lady who has pieced apart how ice cream is made, just don't go to these places. Over 40 custom made ice creams that are fabulous. MK had a double scoop on a waffle cone of Praline Pecan and Caramel, Caramel, Caramel (those are the actual names). She was in heaven. I had a double scoop cup of Chocolate Cake Batter and Chocolate Malt Supreme. Wonderful flavors that accurately were described. Yep, we were there in season and it was about a 20 minute wait. Lines both inside and outside were long and the parking lot was heaving full of cars. What more can you say about good, hand-made dairy products? Given that we live so close to Oberweis, this place was just as good if not a little better.

This place is a great ice cream shop although I only go once and a while. And it is not because it isn't that great either. They have many good flavors of ice cream and I don't know many people who have had all of the flavors. During late June to early September be prepared for extremely long lines, especialy late in the evening. The service is pretty good and all round is fun place to be.

Scrumptious! Beware of super huge portions. We ordered my daughter the "baby" sized cone, and it could have easily fed a baby elepant. Lots of flavors to choose from, indoor and outdoor seating, friendly service, and self-serve water. This place is a must!!

Dear Lord this place is fantastic. With over 50 different types of ice creams, this is my own personal heaven. The giant blue cow on the roof was my first sign... I remember long ago when my family first brought me to Sherman's and I fell in love with the blue moon ice cream. What the *#%@! is that you might ask? Well, I'm not quite sure, but it looks like a smurf, smells like fruit loops, and tastes a bit like pineapple. The consistency is just right and it will leave your tounge with a bright blue hue (I'll post the picture as soon as I develop them) for at least 4 hours. Next to Farr Better Ice Cream's Green Pineapple flavor, Sherman's blue moon is the best ice cream ever. Mr. Sherman, I salute you!

Terrific creamy ice cream with a wide variety of flavors. I had the banana nut and my husband had the grasshopper (similar to mint chocolate). We ordered "baby" scoops hearing they make them big, and that's no lie! The "baby" scoops are larger than most regular sized scoops at other ice cream places. The place is always packed, they have a number system once it gets really busy. This place is definitely worth a visit!

I haven't been here in ages but if I were in the area, wild horses couldn't keep me away from a scoop of Blue Moon and a line out the door. I only wish they shipped to the west coast!

This place is fantastic, based on an annual summer visit for the last 8+ years, the high-star reviews have it right, I'm not sure what's up with the others. I don't have a lot to add beyond what has been said below. You may have to stand in line a while, but you'll find it well worth the wait when you dig into your generous serving of exceptional quality/taste ice cream. Noticed they've added new flavors this year. Also new on the menu: "spaghetti ice cream" which sounds odd but is probably a hit with kids. Consider the "tour of Sherman's"...6 scoops of different flavors....that tempted me this year, but I stuck with favorite: chocomania.

This place seems to have gone downhill. I remember consistently getting pretty good ice cream 10-15 yrs ago and when I was here last week the ice cream had ice crystals on it and did not taste any better than your local Baskin Robbins.

Some of the best ice cream I have ever had. Expect a large crowd. We went here around 8pm on a saturday night and saw a huge crowd but we had nothing but time so we went in. There is a line at an outside window as well as one inside. When you get inside you take a number. There was a very large crowd and we thought we would wait 30 min. To our surprise the wait was only 5 min! Very large selection of flavors. I had the Black Raspberry Supreme. It was awesome. Raspberry ice cream with a fudge swirl in it. My wife had the Mint Chip and it was great as well. We each got one scoop and it was the size of 2! Very large portion size for the $. A must go to place in South Haven.

This ice cream is the best local ice cream shop ever. In the summer it is always busy and crowded. Sometimes there are people waiting on the street to get served or go in. Indoor and outdoor seating for whatever serves you. The portions are big, but so is the price.

Um, their small brownie sundae makes most other sundaes look like teetering toddlers. Delish.
